Strengths

    • The best performing precious metal for the week was palladium, up 6.17 percent. Consumer demand is rising for gasoline- versus diesel-engine powered vehicles, yet automobile sales have started to relax in recent months.  According to Bloomberg, gold bulls outnumber gold bears this week as Trump probes are boosting safe-haven demand for the yellow metal. In fact, gold advanced to the highest level in nearly a month as Trump’s administration “grapples with revelations of mounting scrutiny into son-in-law Jared Kushner’s outreach to Russian officials,” Bloomberg continues. In related news, Fed’s Brainard says that soft inflation data may warrant a rethink on interest rates. Inflation in the Euro-area slowed more than economists forecast.

  • The Indian rupee posted its first monthly loss since November, reports Bloomberg. The positive side of this is the decline came amid increasing demand for dollars to pay for imports of items such as gold. The Perth Mint reported its gold coin and minted bar sales for the month of May, coming in at 29, 679 ounces. This is compared with April’s sales of 10,490 ounces

Investors Better Hope This Time Really Is Different

Full Article: Investors Better Hope This Time Really Is Different

By: The Felder Report

“This time is different.” Sir John Templeton famously called these, “the four most dangerous words in investing,” but that hasn’t stopped many pundits from pointing out the obvious ways in which this time is truly different from the past. And I don’t disagree with them. In fact, we have seen this plenty of times before. During the late-1920’s stocks rose to valuations that were unprecedented at the time. They did so again in the late-1990’s. And it’s true once again that things are now very different than what we have witnessed previously in the markets.

The median stock in the S&P 500 has never been valued higher than it is today. Corporate profit margins over the past decade have soared and sustained at heights rarely if ever seen before. In the past, margin debt was a valuable way to assess risk in the stock market. This relationship has broken down in recent years. The Buffett Yardstick was also not just a good way to assess forward 10-year returns for stocks but also 3-year risk in the stock market, as well. During this cycle this relationship has also failed. Finally, the relationship between demographics and equity valuations has also broken down in recent years.

Contributed Commentaries Will Sandstorm’s Newest Risk Pay Off?

The mining sector continues to sell-off much more than the gold price as the market continues to discount the up-coming VanEck GDXJ Junior Gold Miner ETF re-balance I touched upon last week in this column. More than $800M was collectively taken out of GDX and GDXJ on April 26th, which was the largest one day out-flow in their trading history.

Nevertheless, the M&A in the space also continues to heat up with another high profile proposed merger which was announced on April 26th. Gold-copper developer/explorer Mariana Resources Ltd (MARL.V) said this past Wednesday it has reached an agreement to be acquired by mining company financier Sandstorm Gold (SSL.TO), which currently holds a 7% stake in the compan

Gold: Trumped

Full Article: Gold: Trumped

By: John R. Ing

Since the 2008 recession, US households have lost nearly $13 trillion. Nine years after the financial crisis, the Trump reflation rally is up nearly 10 percent and since his election, U.S. household net worth have climbed an astonishing $93 trillion, on subsidised credit and hopes that Trump will bring back prosperity through growth. That ascent also reflects the overvaluation of real estate and the stock market leading to the highest consumer confidence since the peak of the dot.com bubble. And although, the Federal Reserve increased rates a quarter point, only the third time in 50 years, there are numerous credit distress stories from interest-sensitive car loans to shopping centres and of course retail spending.

While Candidate Trump’s promises to boost economic output through tax cuts, raising tariffs and infrastructure spending were successful enough to get him elected by the so-called forgotten American, President Trump’s failure to replace Obamacare has cast a cloud over his entire White House program. Now his tax reform plan faces even larger hurdles, sending a wave of risk aversion throughout global markets. The threats are both external and internal. The gap between campaign rhetoric and reliability is vast. The fault lines run deep. The judiciary also took a hit as the Republicans exercised the “nuclear option” to appoint Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, breaking 200 plus years of Senate tradition. Mr. Trump is hobbled by his rhetoric and his fractious party, many of who owe their seat to voters rather than Trump’s coattails, are exercising independence. That other branch of government, Congress found its voice having an important say in Mr. Trump’s vision and so everywhere, existing trends are being called into question. What will happen when the debt ceiling comes next, since he will need Democrats to avert a government shutdown by the end of April?

Gold To Do Well On Watered-down Trumponomics In 2017 – Fund Manager

Full Article:  Gold To Do Well On Watered-down Trumponomics In 2017 – Fund Manager

By: Neils Christensen

(Kitco News) – Gold’s rally in 2017 will depend entirely on how effective the rollout of President Donald Trump’s economic and fiscal policies – dubbed Trumponomics – will be, which is making one portfolio manager slightly more bullish.

Michael Pento, president of Pento Portfolio Strategies

In an interview with Kitco News, Michael Pento, president of Pento Portfolio Strategies, said that there was a lot of euphoria in financial markets after Trump’s election win; however, reality is starting to set in now and there is growing concerns that Trump’s proposals will be watered down and delayed, reducing their effectiveness.

Top earners have traditionally been attracted to municipal bonds for their tax-exempt status at the federal and often state and local levels. In the wake of President Donald Trump’s stunning upset victory, however, muni investors were forced to readjust their expectations of fiscal policy going forward. Because Trump had campaigned on deep cuts to corporate and personal income taxes, equities soared while munis sold off, ending a near-record 54 weeks of net inflows.

This appears to have been premature, for a couple of reasons.
