Strengths

• The best performing metal this week was palladium, down just 0.41 percent. Holdings in ETFs backed by palladium have fallen by two-thirds in the last three years and are back to 2010 levels.  However, this is not the sign of a depressed market.  Hedge funds have been taking delivery of the metal and then loan the metal to the market at lease rates of 6 percent for just one week, twice the yield they can earn from 10-year Treasury bonds.  Money continued to pour into gold bullion ETFs this week, with $242 million of gains, compared with $35.2 million the previous week. Bloomberg reports inflation is gradually picking up, with U.S. consumer prices continuing firm in February. This could lead to a faster pace of interest rate hikes. Over the past three months, core inflation has increased at a rate of 3.1 percent. This is boosted by core goods, which is up 2.5 percent, after deflating for a majority of the past five years.

• Another indication of inflation rising is that TIPS, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, saw record inflows in February, a sign of anxiety in the bond market with large tax cuts signed into law in January. Inflation has historically benefitted the price of gold, with investors using it as a hedge against uncertainty. According to Bloomberg, U.S. retail sales fell in February for a third month in a row, raising some concerns on economic growth.

On MSNBC’s “All In” on March 13, I discussed how the removal of Rex Tillerson from the position of secretary of state was the final triumph of largely Republican efforts—but with complicit Democrats as well—to consolidate the making of foreign and security policy exclusively in the White House. Since the 1947 National Security Act, there has been institutional momentum for this shift. It is important to be aware of this institutional momentum because to reverse the shift will require much more than just a new president and administration. It will take statutory change by the Congress. Such change must be highly deliberative and thus will take time. Immediately, however, the damage to U.S. foreign and security policy—and the country in turn—could be so immense that temporary, non-statutory actions are essential.

Having Mike Pompeo at State, Gina Haspel at the CIA, Nikki Haley at the United Nations, and three military professionals closely advising a grossly inexperienced and narcissistic president is sufficient to give pause to anyone interested in arresting the significant deterioration of our democracy. But putting all control over the main instrument of national power that this team is most apt to use—the military—in the hands of one man, Donald Trump, makes President Xi Jinping’s move in China following the Nineteenth Party Congress pale in comparison. First, Xi is not a warmonger, and, second, Trump has become one. If Americans believe that 17 straight years of war is enough, they need to stand by: another 17 or more is in the offing. Blood and treasure will be the payment for years to come.

Gambling is according to Wikipedia the wagering of money (or something of value) on an event with an uncertain outcome. Three elements are required for gambling, Consideration, chance, and prize. Thus, you make a bet and if you are lucky you win a prize but you can also lose it all. Gambling has been around for thousands of years and maybe longer. The first 6-sided dice dates back 3000 years. Eventually gambling became more organised as casinos were established. The first well known casino was set up in Venice in the early 1600s.

Casino means a small house and the house was the banker. The odds were naturally always in favour of the house and that has not changed for centuries. In the last 100 years, the bankers or the House have made fortunes and especially in the last 25 years as market manipulation has taken massive proportions.
