(Kitco News) – With the equity markets in somewhat of a chaotic state and the dollar index on a weaker path, one would have expected the metals to catch a bid. It is possible that the weakness in the equity space is being perceived as a temporary blip, which has been the pattern over the past year. Each time that the equity markets looked like they would roll over values snapped backed and new highs were posted. It is conceivable that funds and investors have sold metals to meet margin calls, especially in the tech sector. Added to this is the growing voice of the world’s central banks that the easy money that has greased the equity skids may be coming to an end. If this equity weakness turns out to be more than a temporary setback these same central bankers will stampede to add more liquidity and push yields lower. The markets are at a critical juncture. Can they sustain upward bias with central banks tightening?  Data suggests they can in the short term but are likely to run into issues if yields rise too quickly. Complacency remains entrenched. This can change quickly. One scare, which could be North Korea, Syria or an acceleration of equity weakness, could start the rout. Core positions in metals should be maintained. Insurance is now no longer optional.

The popularity of trading Bitcoin has now reached the point where none other than the New York Times sees fit to declare cryptocurrencies, or more specifically initial coin offerings, “The Easiest Path To Riches On The Web.” Not to be left out, CNBC this week published a brief tutorial on trading crypto with your smartphone and MarketWatch featured a teenage bitcoin millionaire who now forecasts a $1 million price target.

These are exactly the sort of headlines and stories that characterize a speculative mania otherwise known as a “bubble.” For anyone who was around during the dotcom mania this should quickly bring back memories of all the folks who flocked to day-trading tech stocks. But to really understand the mania you need to look no further than the primary argument in buying crypto in the first place. Investors here claim the value comes from the limited supply. The trouble is there is an unlimited number of types of coins that can be created!

One year ago, British voters cast their ballots in favor of leaving the 28-member European Union, defying multiple opinion polls leading up to the Brexit referendum that said the “remain” camp would notch a narrow victory.

In a pre-Brexit Frank Talk last year, I wrote that Brexit would be regarded as the most consequential political event of 2016. President Donald Trump’s surprise election notwithstanding, I stand by my earlier comment.
